Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) news

In 2017, Biloela State High School will be introducing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) into its teaching and learning environment.  BYOD is a new pathway supporting the delivery of 21st century learning.  It is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their personally-owned mobile devices to access the departments' information and communication (ICT) network.
The BYOD acronym used by the department refers to the teaching and learning environment in Queensland state schools where personally-owned mobile devices are used.
The department has carried out extensive BYOD research within Queensland state schools.  The research built on and acknowledged the distance travelled in implementing 1-to-1 computer to student ratio classes across the state, and other major technology rollouts.
We have chosen to support the implementation of a BYOD model because:
  • BYOD recognises the demand for seamless movement between school, work, home and play;
  • our BYOD program assists students to improve their learning outcomes in a contemporary educational setting and;
  • assisting students to become responsible digital citizens enhances the teaching learning process and achievement of student outcomes as well as the skills and experiences that will prepare them for their future studies and careers.

Students are responsible for the security, integrity, insurance and maintenance of their personal mobile devices and their private network accounts.

Students will not be disadvantaged if they do not have a device to bring to school.

There is a yearly fee of $30 to be a part of the BYOD program starting 2018.

Currently, the process is to download the BYOD charter and sign.

To speed up the process, download the appropriate On-boarding guide for your device, found on the right side of this page.

Return the signed BYOD Charter and $30 to the office and allow 24hrs which will allow us to activate the student's account.

Once activated, the student can then bring their device to school to complete the on-boarding process (this can only be done at school).

If any problems occur see Mr Green in D03 to arrange a time to troubleshoot.

Before acquiring a device to use at school, the parent or caregiver and student should be aware of the schools' specification of appropriate device type, operating system requirements and software.  These specifications relate to the suitability of the device to enabling class activities, meeting student needs and promoting safe and secure access to the department's network.  Biloela State High Schools first choice of device is a laptop or tablet PC (i.e. tablet with keyboard functionality).
Many families may already have a device at home that they will allow the students to use at school.  Below is a list of minimum specifications that the existing device will need for it to be compatible for use in the BYOD program at Biloela State High School. It is highly recommended to have a carry bag with sufficient padding as the devices will be transported between classes.  It is also highly recommended (if purchasing a new device) to purchase the best/longest warranty as well as Accidental Damage Insurance.  Consider modifying your home contents insurance to include accidental damage of portable items off site.

Biloela State High School has endeavoured to make the purchasing process as easy as possible for parents/carers by providing some links to vendors who sell suitable devices.  Please note that these vendors are not endorsed by Biloela State High School and there are many, many places you can purchase devices from that are not listed here.  It is recommended that you do your own research and comparisons.

Things to consider when making comparisons:
  • What are the warranty terms and conditions? Will they attend my home in the Biloela area to do any repairs or do I have to send the device away?
  • Do I need Accidental Damage Protection

Some free software is available to install on students' BYOD machines:

Microsoft Office ProPlus Suite
  • All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple free copies of the Microsoft Office ProPlus Suite to their personal home and mobile computer equipment (including MAC).
  • Students who want the free software will need an active Managed Internet Service (MIS) login, school email account and password - those who don't have these should contact their school's MIS Administrator or class teacher. The administrator will help students activate their MIS login.
  • Find the download and installation instructions here.  You can also get a copy of the download instructions from the techs in D03.

Adobe Suite
  • If a student requires this for their class, they need to see the techs in D03 for installation.

If you need to know of any other software you might require, you will have to liaise with the appropriate teachers.
Please e-mail if you have any questions.
